Care of Splint or Cast at Home

Keep splint/cast clean. You may cover splint/cast with a stocking.

Avoid getting splint/cast wet. Avoid polishing or painting splint or cast. Avoid walking on splint/cast unless you have been instructed to do so.

The skin around the splint/cast may be wiped with a small amount of alcohol on a cotton ball. Inspect the skin for any irritated or reddened areas caused by the cast. Do not use talc or baby powder on skin around splint/cast. Some itching is expected but do not use anything to scratch under the splint/cast. To relieve itching, you may blow air down the splint/cast or apply ice packs.

Contact my office if any of the following occur:

  • New and/or excessive pain
  • Numbness, tingling, excessive swelling, or change in color/temperature of digits
  • Inability to move digits of immobilized extremity
  • Any discharge from under the cast or increased drainage on splint/cast
  • Any cracks or softening of splint/cast
